Adonai Shama, "the LORD is there" comes from the last verse in the Book of Ezekiel (48.35) where the prophet describes the future land of Israel as being the place where the LORD is present. When Jamie and Stacy Cowen moved to Israel with a goal to enhance the presence of the LORD in His land, they took Adonai Shama as the name of community they founded.
The community originally started with those who had immigrated to Israel from the Cowen's former congregation, Tikvat Israel, in the United States. Since then, others who share a similar vision, have joined with us to build a community to encourage a body life which facilitates (though does not require) a traditional Jewish life-style, primarily based upon the Tanakh, Jewish tradition and the teachings of Yeshua in the Apostolic Writings. We currently meet every other week on Shabbat. The services consist of a melding of modern Messianic Jewish melodies with a traditional Jewish liturgy. We include a Torah service, reading a section from the weekly Torah portion as well as a reading from the Apostolic Writings. This is followed by a brief drasha before closing the service. After the service, we share a meal together, often continuing discussions from the Torah reading.
Because our group is small, like a house fellowship (chavurah in Hebrew), we alternate meeting locations among the various members. If you plan on visiting, please contact us in advance. Also, because we meet in homes, we cannot accommodate tour groups.
